What it is

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a dark, choice-driven action RPG from CD Projekt RED. On Xbox 360, the version available is the Enhanced Edition, which includes the original adventure, extra quests, additional cinematics, downloadable content and the Arena mode. It is a focused, chapter-based alternative to The Witcher 3’s open world, with more emphasis on political intrigue, difficult decisions and replaying the story to see a different path.

Story and setting

Geralt of Rivia is drawn into the political turmoil of Temeria after protecting King Foltest from an attempted assassination. When a witcher-like killer begins targeting rulers across the Northern Kingdoms, Geralt sets out to uncover the assassins’ identities, motives and connection to his own profession. The investigation takes him through the contested borderlands around the Pontar, involving kings, soldiers, rebels, mages and non-human communities.

The story is built around consequences rather than a simple good-versus-evil structure. Conversations, alliances and decisions can close off quests, alter relationships and reshape later events. A major choice near the end of the first act sends the following chapter in a substantially different direction, making a second playthrough worthwhile. The game assumes some familiarity with its world, but the Enhanced Edition includes a separate tutorial and remains playable without having finished the first Witcher.

How it plays

Combat is played from a third-person view and combines quick and strong sword attacks with blocking, dodging, bombs, traps and five magical Signs. Geralt carries steel and silver swords for different types of opponent, while preparation matters more than it does in many later action RPGs. Potions and oils can be brewed through alchemy, equipment can be upgraded, and crafting allows stronger swords, armour and other items to be made with the help of merchants and craftsmen.

Character development is divided between swordsmanship, magic and alchemy, with mutagens allowing certain abilities to be modified. The surrounding areas are sizeable but separate rather than forming one continuous open world. Side quests are closely tied to the main plot, and taverns provide diversions such as dice poker, fistfighting and arm wrestling. The combat can feel stiff by modern standards, particularly early on, and the game is noticeably less forgiving than The Witcher 3.

There is no online campaign or multiplayer component. The main game is single-player, while the Arena is an offline challenge mode in which Geralt fights successive waves of enemies, earns rewards and improves his abilities.

Enhanced Edition and updates

The Xbox 360 release launched as The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition. Compared with the original 2011 PC release, it adds around four hours of quests, about 35 minutes of new cutscenes and cinematics, a new opening sequence, the Arena mode, a standalone tutorial and the previously released downloadable content and gameplay upgrades. PC owners received the Enhanced Edition content as a free update, while Xbox 360 copies included it from the start.

The Xbox 360 version is also backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox One X applies the official Xbox One X Enhanced treatment, increasing resolution, texture detail and anti-aliasing through emulation rather than changing the game itself. On original Xbox 360 hardware, installing the game to the hard drive can improve streaming, loading times and some visual detail. Even so, expect occasional texture pop-in, longer loading and less impressive draw distance than on a well-equipped PC.

Platforms, editions and UK price

The original PC game launched on 17 May 2011. The UK Xbox 360 release followed on 17 April 2012, with the Enhanced Edition as the standard console version. Its launch UK RRP was £39.99. The boxed edition included the game, a soundtrack CD, a quest handbook and a map of the game world. It is now a legacy release, so physical copies are generally found through second-hand retailers rather than normal new-game pre-orders.

The Xbox Store version is the backward-compatible Xbox 360 game and can be played on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Prices can change with region and promotions, so the historical £39.99 figure should not be treated as a current digital price. There is no PlayStation version, and the game is not listed in the current UK Game Pass catalogue.

Reception and verdict

The Witcher 2 was warmly received, particularly for its writing, mature political story and the scale of its branching choices. GameSpot awarded the Enhanced Edition 9/10, praising its complex intrigue and meaningful consequences while noting the Xbox 360 version’s reduced shadows, draw distance, texture pop-in and longer loading times compared with PC. Metacritic’s Xbox 360 listing records an 88 critic score from 82 reviews.

It has aged unevenly. The visual design, dialogue and route-splitting narrative remain strong, but the combat, inventory management and occasional technical roughness require patience. For a British player coming from The Witcher 3, it is best approached as a more compact and linear RPG with a sharper focus on consequence. The Enhanced Edition remains the version to play, particularly on Xbox One X or newer Xbox hardware through backwards compatibility.
