Story and setting
Battlefront is not built around a conventional, character-led story. Its Historical Campaigns mode links together battles from the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War, covering locations and conflicts inspired by Episodes I to VI. You fight as the Galactic Republic, Separatists, Rebel Alliance or Galactic Empire, switching sides as the campaigns move through the films’ chronology.
The setting is the real draw. Battles take place on recognisable worlds including Hoth, Endor, Tatooine, Naboo, Geonosis, Kamino and Yavin 4. The game recreates the broad shape of the films’ battles without forcing you into a fixed role, so a fight can move from infantry combat to tank warfare, air support or a desperate attempt to hold a command post.
How it plays
Battlefront is a large-scale shooter with a simple objective: capture and hold command posts while reducing the opposing side’s reinforcements to zero. You choose between different soldier classes, each with its own weapons and abilities, and can fight in first person or switch to a wider third-person view. The battlefields are populated by computer-controlled troops, but the design is clearly aimed at team play rather than a traditional solo campaign.
Vehicles are central rather than decorative. Depending on the map, you can pilot X-wings, TIE fighters, snowspeeders and Jedi starfighters, or drive AT-STs, tanks, speeder bikes and other ground vehicles. Instant Action provides standalone battles, while Galactic Conquest adds a strategic layer in which you fight across a map of planets. On Xbox, local multiplayer is available through two-player split-screen, making the game particularly well suited to same-room co-operative or competitive play.
Online play, updates and added content
The original Xbox release did support Xbox Live multiplayer, and online play was one of its main selling points in 2004. That service is no longer available. Microsoft’s backwards-compatibility programme specifically states that original Xbox online services are not supported on Xbox One, while offline multiplayer features remain intact. The current Xbox version therefore has no usable online mode, despite the historical release having one.
The game did receive post-launch Xbox Live content in its original life, including an automatic update and downloadable content in March 2005. In 2019, Microsoft made the Jabba map available free to owners of the backwards-compatible Xbox version through a content update. These additions do not turn the Xbox edition into a remaster, and there is no modern matchmaking service attached to it.
Platforms, editions and UK price
The original game launched on Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Windows, with Mac and mobile versions following later. Aspyr is not the original Xbox publisher: LucasArts published the 2004 release, while Pandemic Studios developed it. The current Xbox Store edition is available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, is marked Xbox One X Enhanced and costs £8.99 in the UK as of 1 October 2026.
At launch, the UK price was £39.99. There is no pre-order period because the game is long released, and physical Xbox copies are now second-hand items rather than a standard retail edition. The backwards-compatible digital version is the simplest official way to play on a modern Xbox, but remember that Xbox Series S cannot use original disc copies.
Reception and verdict
The critical response was positive but qualified. Metacritic records an Xbox score of 80 from 55 critic reviews, including an 85 from IGN. GameSpot awarded the game 8.2 out of 10, praising its satisfying team-based battles while noting that the formula was familiar.
The recurring criticism was that the single-player experience was less convincing than multiplayer. GamesRadar highlighted the thrill of taking control of Star Wars vehicles but criticised the awkward camera, uneven controls and weak computer-controlled opposition. That assessment still feels fair. Battlefront is at its best as an accessible, chaotic recreation of the films’ battles, especially with a friend beside you. It is less compelling if you want a sophisticated campaign or active online community on Xbox today.
