What it is

Sleeping Dogs is a single-player open-world action game set in a vivid, contemporary Hong Kong. You play Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-born San Francisco police detective sent back to his old city to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad. Its strongest ideas are simple but effective: hard-hitting martial arts, fast driving, parkour-style movement and a story about divided loyalties. The original Xbox 360 release arrived in the UK on Friday, 17 August 2012, not Monday, 13 August. The game was published in Britain by Square Enix, rather than Bandai Namco.

Story and setting

Wei Shen is seconded from the San Francisco Police Department to the Hong Kong Police Department, where his criminal connections make him useful to an undercover operation. He reconnects with childhood friend Jackie Ma and joins the Sun On Yee at street level, working alongside people he once knew while secretly reporting to his police handlers.

The story follows Wei as he rises through the organisation and becomes increasingly caught between police procedure, Triad loyalty and personal relationships. Hong Kong is not a street-for-street recreation, but the game gives its districts distinct identities, from crowded markets and neon shopping streets to docks, tower blocks and hillside roads. The setting draws heavily on Hong Kong crime and martial-arts cinema without reducing the city to a backdrop.

How it plays

Sleeping Dogs is played from a third-person perspective and mixes free-roaming exploration with linear story missions, police cases, favours, races and other activities. Driving is a major part of getting around, with cars, motorbikes and boats available across the city. Wei can leap between moving vehicles, take part in illegal street races and use parkour-like movement to navigate alleys, obstacles and rooftops.

Combat is the game’s defining feature. Rather than relying mainly on firearms, Wei uses punches, kicks, counters, grapples and throws, with environmental takedowns allowing enemies to be slammed into machinery, walls and other hazards. Gunfights use cover and include slow-motion moments when Wei vaults over obstacles. Progress is split between three systems: Triad experience rewards aggressive and stylish combat, Cop experience favours careful mission work and limited collateral damage, while Face experience improves Wei’s reputation, shopping options, vehicles and temporary combat benefits.

The structure is still recognisably that of a 2012 open-world crime game, and some activities become repetitive. Its combat, driving and atmosphere remain more distinctive than its checklist-style side content.

DLC, patches and later editions

The original game received a substantial run of downloadable content. The most notable additions are the story expansions Nightmare in North Point, a supernatural horror episode, and Year of the Snake, which continues Wei’s police career after the main story. Other packs added races, outfits, weapons, vehicles, combat bonuses and police-themed missions, including the Zodiac Tournament, Street Racer Pack and SWAT Pack.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition arrived in 2014 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC, with a Mac version handled by Feral Interactive. It includes all 24 previously released DLC extensions, plus visual, audio and technical improvements. The PC original also received Patch 1.5, which addressed stability, CPU timing, video playback and mouse and camera controls. No multiplayer mode was added; the original release had online leaderboards, but the playable content remains single-player.

Platforms, performance and UK price

The original version launched on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. The current console version is the Definitive Edition on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it runs on Xbox Series X and Series S through backwards compatibility. Microsoft lists FPS Boost support on Series X and Series S. The PS4 edition can be played on PS5, although Sony warns that it may show errors or unexpected behaviour and that some PS4 features may be absent.

As at 1 October 2026, the UK Xbox Store lists the Definitive Edition at £23.99. The UK PlayStation Store lists a £24.99 price, with a temporary £4.99 sale price running until 7 October 2026. The original Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC editions have no current official UK digital RRP listed here, so physical copies are a matter for the second-hand market. The Xbox listing says cloud play is available through Game Pass tiers only when the game has been purchased; it is not presented as a Game Pass catalogue download, and it is not currently listed in the UK PlayStation Plus catalogue.

Critical reception and verdict

Sleeping Dogs was well received at launch, particularly for its melee combat, city and undercover-cop story. The Xbox 360 version holds an 80 Metascore. Official Xbox Magazine UK scored it 90, while GamesMaster UK awarded 91. The Guardian praised its character writing, neon Hong Kong setting and combat, while noting that its open-world structure borrowed heavily from Grand Theft Auto.

It is not as broad or technically polished as the biggest open-world games, and the shooting, driving and side activities can feel uneven. The core campaign remains a strong recommendation for anyone interested in crime dramas, martial-arts action or older open-world games. For a new purchase, the Definitive Edition is the sensible choice because it combines the main game with the complete DLC set and the later technical improvements.
