What it is

Red Dead Redemption is Rockstar’s landmark western action-adventure, following former outlaw John Marston across a changing American frontier. Originally released in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it has since reached PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, with mobile versions also available. The modern editions combine the main campaign with Undead Nightmare and Game of the Year Edition bonus content, but remove the original multiplayer component. It remains a focused, story-led open-world game: less sprawling than Red Dead Redemption 2, but sharper, stranger and often more willing to let its bleak western tale speak for itself.

Story and setting

John Marston is a former outlaw whose family is threatened by federal agents. To secure their safety, he is forced to track down the surviving members of the gang he once rode with, taking him across the American West and into a Mexico on the brink of civil war.

The setting captures the end of the frontier rather than the classic western at its height. Railways, telephones, government authority and industrial expansion are closing in on the old world of cattle towns, outlaws and open ranges. The main story is serious and often melancholy, but it is balanced by eccentric strangers, comic diversions and a supernatural detour in Undead Nightmare.

How it plays

This is a third-person open-world shooter built around riding, gunfights and exploration. Marston can travel on horseback, take cover behind scenery, use a range of pistols, rifles and shotguns, and activate Dead Eye to slow time and place accurate shots. Duels, ambushes and train robberies give the combat a strong western identity, while the horse remains central to getting around the map.

Away from the main missions, there are bounty hunts, stranger encounters, hunting, challenges, gambling and a range of smaller jobs. Fame and honour influence how people respond to Marston, although this is not an RPG in the modern sense: there is no party, skill-tree or dialogue-choice system. The appeal is the rhythm of moving through the world, finding trouble or opportunity, then deciding whether to help, rob or simply ride on.

Platforms, editions and UK price

The original UK release arrived on Friday, 21 May 2010, three days after the North American launch. The current Xbox edition works on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, while the PlayStation release covers PS4 and PS5. The game is also available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in its original form, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Windows PC, with iOS and Android versions available through supported devices and Netflix.

The UK digital price is £39.99 on Steam and £49.99 on the PlayStation and Xbox stores at the time of writing. PS Plus Extra subscribers can download it through the Game Catalogue, and it is also part of the rotating GTA+ Games Library. There is no current Xbox Game Pass listing. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the current version targets 60 frames per second, supports HDR and offers resolutions up to 4K. Switch 2 adds 60fps performance, HDR, DLSS and mouse controls. The PC version adds native 4K support up to 144Hz on suitable hardware, ultrawide monitor support, adjustable draw distances and shadow settings.

What has changed since launch

The original release received a substantial run of downloadable content. Undead Nightmare added a separate zombie-horror campaign, while Outlaws to the End introduced cooperative missions for two to four players. Legends and Killers, Liars and Cheats, Myths and Mavericks, the Hunting and Trading content and various bonus packs expanded the original multiplayer and single-player package.

The modern releases include the complete single-player campaign, Undead Nightmare and Game of the Year Edition bonus content. They do not include multiplayer, even though the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions originally supported online modes. Rockstar has continued to patch the newer editions: PS5 gained an optional 60fps setting in 2023, the PC version received frame-pacing, lighting, dynamic-resolution and stability improvements in 2024, and a February 2026 update delivered further general fixes for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.

Reception and verdict

Red Dead Redemption was met with near-universal acclaim. The Xbox 360 version holds a 95 Metascore, IGN UK awarded it 9.8 out of 10 and Eurogamer gave it 8 out of 10 at launch. Those scores reflect the game’s unusually convincing world, strong writing, memorable soundtrack and carefully paced campaign, rather than technical perfection.

Some movement, mission design and shooting encounters feel dated beside Red Dead Redemption 2, and the current editions are expensive for a 2010 game. Even so, the original remains the more compact and direct of the two adventures. If you want the complete single-player experience, the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series versions are the best technical choices. The Switch 2 edition is the most flexible portable option, while the PS4, Switch and Xbox backward-compatible versions remain perfectly serviceable if you already own them.

Red Dead Redemption: your questions

Is Red Dead Redemption on Xbox Series X|S?

Yes. The Xbox digital edition includes the backward-compatible Xbox version and the current Xbox Series X|S version. The Series version supports 60 frames per second, HDR and resolutions up to 4K.

Is Red Dead Redemption 1 included with Undead Nightmare?

Yes. The modern digital editions include the complete Red Dead Redemption campaign and Undead Nightmare, along with Game of the Year Edition bonus content.

Does Red Dead Redemption have multiplayer?

The current PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, Switch 2 and PC editions do not include multiplayer. The original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions did have online multiplayer and cooperative modes.

Is Red Dead Redemption on Xbox Game Pass?

It is not currently listed in Xbox Game Pass. On PlayStation, it is available through the PS Plus Extra Game Catalogue, and it is also included in GTA+ while it remains in that service’s rotating library.

Should I play Red Dead Redemption before Red Dead Redemption 2?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the earlier story chronologically, but either order works. Playing Red Dead Redemption first gives you the original story without requiring knowledge of the prequel, while playing it after Red Dead Redemption 2 adds context to several characters and events.
