What it is
Over the Hill is an off‑road exploration and driving game from Funselektor (with development help from Strelka Games) that recreates a ’60s–’80s vintage 4x4 feel in a series of open, autumnal wilderness regions. It leans into slow, mechanical driving, navigation and light survival systems rather than tight circuit racing, and supports cooperative play so you can tackle difficult trails with friends.

Story and setting
The game is set in a stylised wilderness inspired by real places such as the Kootenay Mountains in British Columbia and framed in a late‑season, golden autumn palette. You begin in a valley area that acts as a gentle tutorial before moving by ferry into wetlands and, eventually, a rugged mountain region where steep climbs and icy conditions provide the toughest tests. Scattered landmarks — cabins, old logging and mining equipment, fire towers and the odd meteorite — provide environmental storytelling and navigation anchors rather than a linear narrative.
Seasonality and dynamic weather are part of the design: rain, snow and day‑night cycles change how surfaces behave and how easy it is to find routes through bogs, rock fields and mud. The tone is exploratory and reflective rather than competitive; camping, photography and discovery are presented as core activities alongside technical driving challenges.
How it plays
Vehicles are period‑inspired 4x4s from roughly the 1960s–1980s with distinct handling and mechanical behaviour. Terrain types (more than ten have been referenced by the developers) directly affect traction and handling; tools such as planks and winches are used to overcome obstacles, and environmental systems like accumulating snow can make previously passable tracks much harder. There’s no race clock — progression comes from reaching objectives, unlocking new areas and upgrading vehicles.
Single‑player is fully supported, and the game is explicitly designed to be played cooperatively: the developers and Xbox’s preview write‑up confirm drop‑in/drop‑out co‑op for up to four players, letting friends help each other with recovery, winching and routefinding. The playable perspectives include first‑ and third‑person camera options and a higher “bird view”/isometric look for scouting.
Platforms, editions and UK availability
Funselektor has listed the game on Steam (AppID 2929250) and published press material and trailers that tie the PC launch to Wednesday 14 October 2026 (UK date). Xbox has featured Over the Hill in an ID@Xbox piece and the studio has stated console ports will follow; trailers and studio posts indicate console releases will arrive after the Steam launch, with specific console launch windows communicated as “2027” for platforms beyond PC.
At the time of writing there is a verified Steam store presence, an official press kit page from Funselektor, an Xbox Wire feature, and several developer trailers (demo trailer and release‑date trailer) that have been published during 2026. The studio has discussed a launch soundtrack DLC and a supporter bundle on the store announcement, but official UK retail editions or a confirmed PEGI entry have not been posted publicly.
Trailers, events and what was shown
Key public reveals: an early gameplay reveal at the Triple‑i Initiative showcase (April 2025) that established the tone and mechanics; a Steam Next Fest public demo and demo trailer released in June 2026 which let players sample three demo vehicles and a portion of the world; and a release‑date trailer published on 10 August 2026 announcing the 14 October 2026 Steam launch. Xbox’s ID@Xbox feature in January 2026 provided an extended developer overview of regions, weather systems and co‑op design. More recent showcases (Gamescom/other press in September 2026) reiterated the PC release date and confirmed console ports are planned for 2027.
What still isn’t confirmed
Official UK retail timings, an exact UK RRP in pounds and a formal PEGI rating are not published by the developer or storefront pages as of 1 October 2026. Precise console release dates and whether the game will be on Xbox Game Pass at launch remain unconfirmed; Funselektor’s materials and the Steam announcement specify a PC (Steam) launch on 14 October 2026 and note console ports will follow in 2027, but they do not give exact console dates or subscription plans.
Platform lists beyond Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S (for example PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch or macOS) are unconfirmed. Any report claiming confirmed PS5 or Switch launch windows or specific UK pricing should be treated as tentative unless it cites an official Funselektor or platform storefront update.

Over the Hill: your questions
Will Over the Hill be on Xbox Game Pass at launch?
Not confirmed. Funselektor and Xbox have featured the game publicly, but the studio has not announced Game Pass availability for launch; console versions have a 2027 window with no subscription details given.
Can I play with friends on launch day?
Yes — the studio and Microsoft’s ID@Xbox listing state the game supports online co‑op for up to four players; the PC Steam release on 14 October 2026 is the confirmed launch platform for those wanting to play on day one.
What platforms is Over the Hill confirmed for?
PC (Windows) via Steam is confirmed for 14 October 2026; Xbox Series X|S is confirmed as a target platform but its retail window has been stated as following the PC launch (console ports expected in 2027).
Is there a demo before release?
A public demo was distributed during Steam Next Fest in June 2026; that demo and its trailer remain the best way to try the game before launch.
