What it is
NBA 2K6 is a serious basketball simulation from Visual Concepts, built around detailed control, player tendencies and a broadcast-style presentation. It launched on Xbox 360 in North America on 22 November 2005, but the UK and wider PAL release followed on Friday, 28 April 2006. That distinction matters: the earlier date is the North American Xbox 360 launch date, not the UK release.
Shaquille O’Neal appears on the cover and contributed motion-captured animations, while the game uses the 2005–06 NBA season as its roster base. The Xbox 360 version is visually sharper than the Xbox and PlayStation 2 editions, although most of its modes and underlying gameplay were carried across largely unchanged.

What it is
NBA 2K6 aims for simulation rather than arcade spectacle. Matches are shaped by team systems, individual player tendencies and a more deliberate pace, with the computer opponents adjusting to how you attack. The presentation borrows heavily from televised NBA coverage, with Kevin Harlan on play-by-play, Kenny Smith providing colour commentary and Craig Sager handling sideline reports.
The principal control feature is the Shot Stick, which uses the right stick for more precise jump shots, lay-ups, runners, fade-aways and dunks. Dual Player Control lets you move a teammate into position for actions such as give-and-goes and alley-oops, while the Strip n Rip System gives defence more directional control when attempting steals.
How it plays
The Association is the main long-term mode, putting you in charge of an NBA franchise. You manage the roster, contracts, staff, scouting and player development, with team owners setting different expectations. It is a proper season-and-franchise structure rather than a thin exhibition menu, and remains one of the strongest reasons to play NBA 2K6 today.
The 24/7: Road to the EBC mode provides a separate career-style path. You create a player, take them through training and street competitions, earn money and unlock improvements, then work towards the Entertainers Basketball Classic. The Crib acts as a hub for unlockable content, while the V.I.P. System records playing habits and allows profiles to be compared or used as offline opponents. Street, tournament, season, practice and situation modes round out the package.
Online mode and post-launch content
Yes — NBA 2K6 included Xbox Live multiplayer at launch, with quick matches, tournaments, leagues, leaderboards and street games. The original online package also supported friends, voice communication and downloadable content, while the V.I.P. System could be used to exchange player profiles. The game’s online infrastructure is historical, though: as of 1 October 2026, 2K’s current online-services information does not list NBA 2K6, so there is no confirmed modern matchmaking service to rely on.
There is no documented post-launch expansion or additional gameplay mode for the Xbox 360 edition. Confirmed downloadable material included roster updates and unlockable basketball shoes, alongside Xbox Live Marketplace extras such as team themes. Those themes were cosmetic rather than substantial downloadable content, and the original Xbox 360 Marketplace environment should not be confused with a modern live-service update programme.
Xbox 360 version and performance
The Xbox 360 release adds the expected generational visual upgrade: improved lighting, more detailed player models, cloth and presentation effects, and a camera that sits closer to the action. On a high-definition display it can look striking, particularly during replays and broadcast sequences. The player animation and individual mannerisms remain a strength, helped by the game’s emphasis on different playing styles.
The improvement is less dramatic on a standard-definition television, where the game can look close to the Xbox version and some court markings show visible jagged edges. Reviews also noted that the 360 edition did not substantially change the feel of the existing game, and contemporary players reported occasional freezing and stability problems. There is no reliable record of a later patch that transformed the experience.
Reception and buying in the UK
NBA 2K6 was well received, although critics were divided over whether its visual upgrade justified buying it again over the Xbox or PlayStation 2 version. GameSpot scored the Xbox 360 edition 8.3 out of 10, IGN gave it 7.8, and Official Xbox Magazine awarded 8.0. The Xbox 360 Metacritic average is 81 from 33 critic reviews.
For a British buyer, the important practical point is that the game is an Xbox 360 physical release rather than a current digital product. It is not listed in Xbox’s official backward-compatibility catalogue, and there is no current Game Pass or PlayStation Plus edition. Used PAL copies are the realistic route, with condition and completeness more important than any supposed rarity. The original UK RRP is not reliably documented in the surviving retail records, so any precise launch-pound figure should be treated cautiously.
Not yet confirmed
- The original UK RRP and any formal UK pre-order price for the PAL Xbox 360 release are not reliably archived.
- 2K does not provide a specific NBA 2K6 server-retirement date in its current support information, so the present availability of the original Xbox Live matchmaking cannot be confirmed.
