What it is

Mirror’s Edge is DICE’s 2008 first-person action-adventure about speed, balance and finding a route across a tightly controlled city. You play Faith Connors, a Runner who carries sensitive information by hand rather than trusting monitored communications. The important UK date correction is that Tuesday, 11 November 2008 was the North American launch; the console version arrived in the UK on Friday, 14 November 2008. It remains an unusually focused game: short, stylish and built around movement rather than shooting.

Story and setting

Mirror’s Edge takes place in a near-future city where crime is rare, information is heavily controlled and surveillance has become part of everyday life. The Runners operate outside that system, carrying messages across rooftops and through back alleys for clients who do not want their communications monitored.

Faith’s latest job becomes personal when she discovers that her sister Kate, a police officer, has been framed for the murder of reformist mayoral candidate Robert Pope. Investigating the killing draws Faith into a conspiracy involving Pirandello Kruger, a private security company and Project Icarus, a programme designed to help authorities track and eliminate Runners. The plot provides momentum and some memorable twists, although the writing and supporting cast are less assured than the game’s central idea.

How it plays

This is a first-person platform game in which the camera makes every jump feel immediate. Faith can sprint, vault, wall-run, swing from pipes, climb, slide under obstacles and roll after a drop. The controls are designed around chaining actions together, so the pleasure comes from maintaining momentum and improvising a clean route through an environment rather than stopping to fight.

Runner Vision highlights useful surfaces and objects in red, but the game still expects you to read the architecture and work out where to go. Levels are largely linear, with occasional alternative routes and sections that function like environmental puzzles. Combat is deliberately secondary. Faith can disarm opponents and use their weapons, but carrying a gun slows her down and makes the game feel less effective. Escaping, redirecting guards or simply running past them is usually the better option.

The campaign is brief and some sequences rely on trial and error, particularly when a jump or wall-run is not as forgiving as the surrounding flow. The separate Time Trial mode is where the movement system becomes most compelling, asking you to learn routes, shave seconds from your runs and repeat sections until every landing is clean.

Post-launch content and updates

The main addition after release was the Pure Time Trials Map Pack, launched on 19 February 2009 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It contains nine races across seven new and redesigned maps, removing the police, guns and conventional city environments to concentrate on speed and flow. The current UK Xbox listing prices the add-on at £3.99 and supports it on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

PlayStation 3 also received Synethesia, a free exclusive Time Trial map released on 29 January 2009. The base game already included Time Trials, leaderboards and ghost runs, while the PC edition received version 1.01 maintenance support. There was no story expansion, co-operative campaign or competitive multiplayer added after launch.

Platforms, editions and UK price

The original game was released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, with the PC version following in January 2009. It is not an Xbox 360 exclusive, despite some older listings focusing on that version. On current Xbox hardware, the backward-compatible release is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It is Xbox One X Enhanced, and the UK Xbox listing also identifies FPS Boost support on Series X|S.

The standard UK retail price at launch was listed as £49.99 for the console version. There were no separately documented UK collector’s or deluxe editions in the sources checked. For a modern purchase, the Xbox Store lists the standard game at £14.99, with Pure Time Trials sold separately for £3.99. The PC version remains available through Steam, while there is no pre-order to consider for a game released in 2008.

Critical reception and verdict

Mirror’s Edge was well received overall but clearly divided opinion. The Xbox 360 version holds a 79 Metascore on Metacritic. Eurogamer awarded it 8/10, GameSpot gave it 7/10 and VideoGamer scored it 9/10. Reviewers consistently praised the first-person free-running, sharp art direction and sense of speed, while criticising the awkward combat, occasional control problems, short campaign and trial-and-error level design.

Those reservations still matter, but so does the game’s originality. Mirror’s Edge is at its best when it lets you run uninterrupted through a route you have just learned, turning a series of jumps and slides into one fluid movement. It is less convincing as a shooter or a story-led thriller, but for a compact single-player experience centred on parkour, it remains distinctive and worth playing on Xbox Series X|S or PC.

Not yet confirmed

  • No current official announcement of a remake, remaster or further downloadable content for the 2008 game has been verified as of 1 October 2026; reports suggesting one should be treated as unconfirmed.
  • The current status of the original game’s leaderboard and ghost-download services is not clearly documented by EA or Microsoft, so they should not be treated as guaranteed active features.
  • The original game is not listed in the current UK PlayStation Plus catalogue pages checked, but subscription availability can change by region and over time.
