What it is

Mass Effect is BioWare’s 2007 action role-playing game, combining third-person squad combat with a branching science-fiction story. The UK Xbox 360 release arrived on Friday, 23 November 2007, three days after the North American launch. You play Commander Shepard, an elite human agent investigating a rogue Spectre and a threat that could destroy the galaxy. Dialogue choices, political decisions and squad relationships give the campaign its identity, while character classes, skills and equipment provide the RPG framework. The original game is still playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. The 2021 Legendary Edition offers a remastered version of Mass Effect as part of a three-game collection, rather than a replacement release for the original Xbox 360 edition.

Story and setting

Mass Effect begins in a future where humanity has joined a wider galactic civilisation linked by mass relays. Shepard serves aboard the SSV Normandy and becomes involved in the investigation of Saren Arterius, a Spectre who has turned against the Citadel Council and unleashed the synthetic geth against unsuspecting worlds.

The setting is one of the game’s great strengths. The Citadel, human colonies, alien governments and long-standing conflicts are introduced through conversations, optional assignments and the in-game Codex. Shepard can be customised in appearance, background, class and gender, while dialogue choices shape the tone of their responses and can influence missions, alliances and relationships. The game’s morality system separates Paragon and Renegade choices, allowing a diplomatic, ruthless or more complicated version of Shepard.

How it plays

Combat is played from a third-person perspective, with Shepard accompanied by two squad members chosen from a larger cast. Six classes cover soldier, biotic and technical specialisms, and each character can be developed through skill trees, weapons, armour, ammunition types and equipment upgrades. A command wheel lets you pause the action, issue orders and use abilities, so the best encounters reward positioning and squad management rather than simply holding down the trigger.

Away from the main missions, the Normandy’s galaxy map opens up optional assignments and largely uncharted planets. The Mako rover is used to explore some of those surfaces and fight enemies, although its loose handling and awkward terrain remain among the original game’s most dated features. The same is true of the inventory interface, frequent loading and occasional squad artificial-intelligence problems. Those rough edges sit alongside excellent voice acting, strong character writing and a campaign that gives meaningful weight to many conversations.

DLC and later versions

The original release was expanded by Bring Down the Sky, a story-focused mission pack, and Pinnacle Station, a combat-oriented add-on set in an Alliance training facility. Pinnacle Station contains 13 combat scenarios and requires the 1.02 update on PC. EA’s current support information confirms that both add-ons are included with the digital PC version sold through the EA app. On the original Xbox 360 release, the add-ons remain separate purchases where available.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition arrived in 2021 and includes the first game alongside Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, plus more than 40 pieces of single-player DLC, promotional weapons and armour. Its version of Mass Effect adds improved aiming, weapons balance, controls, squad behaviour, cameras, visuals and quality-of-life fixes. Pinnacle Station is not included in the official Legendary Edition content list, so the original Xbox 360 version remains the straightforward way to access that add-on.

Platforms, editions and UK price

Mass Effect first launched as an Xbox 360 exclusive. It later received PC and PlayStation 3 versions, while the Xbox 360 edition became backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The current UK Xbox listing supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and lists the original digital game at £14.99 before temporary discounts. A used physical Xbox 360 copy is another option, but prices vary by condition and retailer.

The reported UK launch price for the standard edition was £44.99. A Limited Collector’s Edition was also released, containing additional books and a bonus disc, but a reliable UK launch RRP for that edition is not established here. There is no pre-order period now: this is a catalogue release, not an upcoming game. The original game carries a PEGI 18 rating for violence.

Reception and verdict

Mass Effect was widely praised at launch for its world-building, writing, cinematic presentation and ambitious choice system. Metacritic records a 91 out of 100 Xbox 360 critic average from 74 reviews. GameSpot awarded it 8.5 out of 10, IGN scored it 9.4 out of 10 and Eurogamer gave it 8 out of 10. Official Xbox Magazine awarded it 10 out of 10.

The reservations were consistent: texture pop-in, frame-rate dips, long loading sequences, clumsy menus, uneven enemy artificial intelligence and the Mako’s handling. Those issues are more obvious today, but they do not undermine the quality of the characters or the sense that the player is directing a personal science-fiction campaign. For a modern first playthrough, Legendary Edition is the smoother option. For the original Xbox 360 experience, the backward-compatible release preserves the version that established the series.

Mass Effect: your questions

Is Mass Effect available on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S?

Yes. The original Xbox 360 version is backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and is listed on the UK Xbox Store. The 2021 Legendary Edition is also available on those newer Xbox consoles.

Is the original Mass Effect included with Xbox Game Pass?

The UK Xbox Store currently lists the original game as included with Xbox Game Pass Premium and Ultimate through EA Play. Subscription catalogues can change, so check the store listing before subscribing specifically for this game.

Does the original Mass Effect have multiplayer?

No. Mass Effect is a single-player game. Its squad system is controlled locally by one player and does not provide online co-op or competitive multiplayer.

Should I play the original Mass Effect or Legendary Edition?

Legendary Edition is the more convenient choice for most players because it improves the first game’s visuals, controls, aiming, squad behaviour and interface, and includes the full trilogy. The original Xbox 360 version is worth choosing if you specifically want the 2007 presentation or access to Pinnacle Station, which is not included in Legendary Edition.

What DLC was released for Mass Effect?

The original game received Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station. Bring Down the Sky is a story-driven mission pack, while Pinnacle Station adds 13 combat scenarios and an Alliance training facility.
