What it is
Manic Miner is a modern authorised reboot of Matthew Smith’s 1983 ZX Spectrum platformer, rebuilt by BBG Entertainment and due in the UK on Thursday 5 November 2026. The relaunch aims to preserve the original’s 20 levels and tight, timing-heavy design while offering a toggleable modern presentation, updated controls, a rearranged soundtrack and an interactive historical archive. What’s confirmed is a single-player experience with online leaderboards rather than multiplayer, and releases planned for current and last-generation consoles plus PC and macOS.

Story and setting
The reboot keeps the simple premise of the original: you control Miner Willy as he navigates a sequence of hazardous rooms and caverns, collecting items while avoiding creatures and environmental hazards before oxygen runs out. BBG’s materials emphasise fidelity to the original structure — the full set of 20 classic levels is included — but frame the game with an expanded historical section that documents the creation and legacy of Manic Miner. There is no expanded narrative or new campaign announced. The focus, according to the developer, is on presenting the original arcade-style progression with options to experience it either as the Spectrum-era pixel presentation or in a new, modern HD presentation with parallax layers and lighting effects.
How it plays
Gameplay is the side-view, single-player platforming the title is known for: precision jumps, timed sequences and a strict ‘collect-every-item’ objective per room. BBG says controls have been modernised for contemporary pads and mice, but retains the original level layout and difficulty curve. The release notes and storefront text also confirm a rearranged soundtrack that includes the classical pieces associated with the original and a toggle between classic pixel visuals (with optional CRT filters) and a remade HD presentation. The reboot adds online global leaderboards so scores can be compared internationally, but there is no online co-op or multiplayer mode listed. There are also “extensive historical bonus content” and an in-game archive documenting the game’s development and place in 1980s home-computer culture.
Platforms, editions and UK availability
BBG’s own site and platform storefronts list the game for Windows (Steam), macOS, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch; the Xbox Store page additionally confirms Smart Delivery and Xbox Play Anywhere for Microsoft platforms. The official Xbox storefront lists PEGI 3 and repeats the developer’s summary and feature set. BBG exhibited a playable build at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne (Retro Area, Hall 10.2) and published an official trailer alongside the announcement in late August 2026; the trailer and storefront listings show the November 5 release date. BBG has not published a UK-specific RRP or a list of UK retailers; edition types (digital-only, physical collector’s edition) are not confirmed.
What we still don’t know
BBG has confirmed the release date, platforms and many features but several practical details remain unannounced. UK pricing and specific retailer pre-order options have not been published. There’s no confirmation of a physical edition for the UK, nor of any post-launch roadmap, DLC or mod support. The developer has also not named the game engine in public materials. Another open question is subscription availability: BBG and storefronts have not confirmed presence on Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus or a launch discount. Finally, while the developer acknowledged use of generative AI tools in the trailer’s production, there has been no technical disclosure about whether AI assisted in any in-game assets; that remains unconfirmed.
Should you pre-order?
If you want an officially authorised, faithful way to play the original 20 levels on modern hardware and you care about online leaderboards and optional modern visuals, the reboot looks worth considering. If you want an experience that preserves every sensory detail of the ZX Spectrum original, there are faithful fan recreations already available and the reboot’s modern presentation and soundtrack rearrangements have drawn mixed responses from retro communities. For most UK buyers it makes sense to wait for confirmed UK prices, store-specific pre-order bonuses and any hands-on previews from outlets after Gamescom before committing to a purchase.
Not yet confirmed
- UK retail pricing and RRP for digital/physical editions
- Whether a physical boxed edition will be available in the UK
- Any inclusion on subscription services at launch (Xbox Game Pass / PlayStation Plus)

Manic Miner: your questions
Is this the original Manic Miner or a full remake?
It’s an authorised reboot that includes all 20 original levels and the same single-player design, but with a modern visual mode, a rearranged soundtrack and updated controls; a toggle lets you play in original-style pixel presentation or the new HD mode.
Which platforms will it be available on in the UK?
BBG and platform storefronts list Windows (Steam), macOS, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch; the Xbox storefront confirms optimisation for Series X|S.
Does it have online multiplayer or co-op?
No — the game is single-player only. Online features confirmed so far are global leaderboards for score comparison, not multiplayer.
What is the PEGI rating?
The game is rated PEGI 3 on the Xbox storefront and in BBG’s product information.
