What it is

Mafia is a story-led crime action-adventure set in 1930s America, built around driving, third-person gunfights and a carefully paced rise through the organised-crime world. The original Xbox version is not the 2002 release often associated with the game: that was the Windows edition. In Britain, Mafia arrived on Xbox on Friday, 26 March 2004, almost 19 months later.

It remains one of the more distinctive gangster games of its era. Its fictional city of Lost Heaven provides the backdrop, but the campaign is much more linear than Grand Theft Auto. Mafia is interested in atmosphere, character and consequence rather than letting you treat the city as a giant playground.

Story and setting

You play Thomas “Tommy” Angelo, a taxi driver whose life changes after he helps two members of the Salieri crime family escape a pursuing gang. Tommy is initially reluctant to join the organisation, but financial pressure and the promise of a better life draw him into a world of protection rackets, robberies, assassinations and gang warfare.

The story is framed as Tommy recounting his past to a detective in exchange for witness protection. It covers several years, following his progress from an ordinary cab driver to a trusted Mafia operative. Lost Heaven is a fictional American city influenced by Chicago and other Depression-era urban centres, with industrial districts, residential neighbourhoods, countryside roads and a busy central island. The campaign contains about 20 substantial missions and takes its crime drama seriously, with fully voiced scenes and a strong period soundtrack.

How it plays

Mafia combines third-person shooting with period driving. Missions regularly switch between travelling across Lost Heaven, tailing suspects, carrying out mob hits, escaping police, stealing cars and taking part in set-piece shootouts. The gunplay is comparatively deliberate, with limited ammunition, powerful weapons and enemies who can punish careless movement. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, rifles, baseball bats and the Thompson submachine gun.

Driving is central rather than incidental. Cars have sluggish brakes, distinct handling and visible damage, while traffic lights, speed limits and police patrols reinforce the game's attempt to simulate 1930s motoring. The Xbox version raises the speed limit and reduces some of the original PC edition's traffic-law friction, but the driving can still feel slow by modern standards. The main campaign is linear, although Free Ride lets you explore Lost Heaven separately, and completing the story unlocks Free Ride Extreme with additional challenges and unusual vehicle rewards.

The Xbox version

The Xbox port is playable, but it is generally regarded as the weakest major version of the original game. Compared with the PC release, it has flatter and blurrier textures, shorter visual detail at distance, more noticeable pop-in and a loading screen when crossing the middle of Lost Heaven. The city also loses much of the atmosphere that made long drives appealing on PC.

Cutscenes are presented as pre-rendered videos rather than the PC version's in-engine sequences, and the image quality is visibly softer. GameSpot also noted that blood effects are absent from Xbox shoot-outs, while period reviews reported slowdown during busy chases and occasional technical problems. Loading is quicker than on PlayStation 2, but the port still feels like a compromise rather than a proper technical showcase for the original Xbox.

Patches, modes and reception

There is no documented Xbox DLC campaign, expansion or online component. Free Ride and Free Ride Extreme are part of the game's existing package rather than post-launch additions. The Windows edition received official patches, with version 1.2 regarded as the final official update; later PC rereleases include modern compatibility changes, but those do not improve the original Xbox disc.

The original Windows release was critically acclaimed, with a Metacritic average of 88, while IGN awarded it 9.2 out of 10 and GameSpot gave it 9.3. The Xbox version received a more mixed response because of its technical compromises. GameSpot scored it 7.1 out of 10, Official Xbox Magazine awarded 73 out of 100, and the Xbox version's Metacritic average was 66. The consensus was consistent: the writing, voice acting and period setting survived the conversion, but the visuals, pacing and presentation did not.

UK availability and what to buy now

The English PAL Xbox version shipped in the UK on 26 March 2004. It was a physical release for the original Xbox and is now out of print, so there is no current official UK RRP or pre-order price to quote. Anyone buying it today will be looking for a pre-owned disc, with the usual variation according to condition, completeness and retailer stock.

The original game is also available on PC through modern digital storefronts, but those editions should not be confused with the Xbox port. Current Xbox listings use Mafia: Definitive Edition, a ground-up remake released in 2020 and later updated for Xbox Series X and Series S. That is a separate game with different visuals, gameplay changes and technical features, rather than a digital reissue of the 2004 Xbox version.

Not yet confirmed

  • No current official UK RRP, live pre-order listing or modern Xbox digital release has been confirmed for the original 2004 Xbox version.
  • No official Xbox DLC or post-launch content expansion has been documented for the original release. The available extra modes are Free Ride and Free Ride Extreme.
