What it is

Gotcha is a first-person paintball shooter from German developer Sixteen Tons Entertainment. It presents paintball as a brightly coloured, arcade-style tournament rather than a serious simulation, borrowing the team-based structure of Counter-Strike while replacing bullets with paint. The date often attached to the game, 31 July 2004, belongs to the Windows release. The Xbox PAL version followed in Europe on 15 April 2005, which is the relevant UK-era release date.

Story and setting

There is not much of a conventional story. You enter the fictional International Marker Sports League Supercup, an underground competition built around illegal paintball duels. Sixteen Tons describes teams of 20 players competing for the IMS League title, with matches staged in deliberately outlandish locations including an offshore rig, the 85th floor of a skyscraper and the ruins of a medieval castle. The league campaign is structured around 28 opposing teams and a worldwide selection of fields.

How it plays

Gotcha is played from the first-person view and is much closer to an arcade shooter than a paintball simulation. You can crouch, lie down and strafe, while the arsenal includes a pump-action paintball gun, a sniper marker with telescopic sight, automatic markers and paint or smoke grenades. The game offers 18 selectable male and female players, 12 markers and a career-style league in which successful matches provide access to better equipment.

The match types are familiar: Capture the Flag, Flag Elimination, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Team Elimination, Last Man Standing and Kill the King. In single-player, computer-controlled teams fill out the matches and the league provides most of the progression, but the basic objectives repeat quickly. The Xbox version was built around short competitive bouts rather than a story campaign with set-piece missions.

Online and local multiplayer

At launch, the Xbox version supported Xbox Live multiplayer for up to 12 players, alongside System Link play. That made Gotcha primarily a multiplayer game, with the solo league acting as a way to practise the weapons, fields and rules. Xbox listings also promoted voice communication and online competition as part of the package.

The important modern qualification is that Microsoft discontinued Xbox Live for original Xbox games on 15 April 2010. Gotcha therefore has an online mode historically, but its official Xbox Live matchmaking is no longer available. System Link remains the relevant multiplayer option on original hardware, subject to having the consoles, copies and network setup required.

UK availability and platform support

The Xbox release is a PAL physical game from the final years of the original Xbox. European databases and contemporary listings place it on 15 April 2005, while 31 July 2004 refers to the earlier PC release. European publishing credits vary because the game appeared under Take-Two's wider publishing operation, with Gathering and Global Star Software also named on different regional listings.

There is no current official digital edition, Xbox One or Xbox Series backward-compatibility version, Game Pass listing or PlayStation release. The practical UK route is a second-hand PAL Xbox disc. No reliable current UK RRP or retailer listing survives, so any price today is a collector or used-market figure rather than an official recommended price.

Reception and what changed after launch

The Xbox version received a mixed reception. Jeuxvideo.com scored it 9/20, criticising the imprecise controls, weak artificial intelligence, rough visuals and limited solo appeal. A later MANIAC test gave the single-player component 40/100, while noting that the game at least offered a useful spread of modes and online or System Link play. Reviewers commonly singled out crude character models, sliding animation and slowdown when several opponents were on screen.

There is no verified record of an Xbox expansion, extra map pack or post-launch mode. Archived databases record no add-on content, and the surviving Xbox release appears to be the complete retail package. There is also no well-documented official patch history, so buyers should expect the original technical performance and dated presentation rather than a later fixed or enhanced edition.

Not yet confirmed

  • The 15 April 2005 date is consistently listed for the European Xbox release, but a separate UK-only street-date record is not readily preserved.
  • The original UK RRP and retailer launch listings have not been reliably archived.
  • A definitive UK PEGI or ELSPA rating could not be verified from an official rating database; surviving databases disagree or leave the field blank.
  • No official post-launch Xbox patch has been located. Minor undocumented disc revisions cannot be ruled out.

Gotcha!: your questions

When was Gotcha released in the UK?

The Xbox PAL release is generally dated 15 April 2005 across European listings. The 31 July 2004 date refers to the Windows version, not the Xbox release.

Does Gotcha have online multiplayer?

Yes. The Xbox version supported Xbox Live matches for up to 12 players, but Microsoft ended original Xbox Live support on 15 April 2010. System Link is the remaining official multiplayer option on compatible original Xbox hardware.

What modes are in Gotcha?

The game includes Capture the Flag, Flag Elimination, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Team Elimination, Last Man Standing and Kill the King, alongside its 28-team league campaign.

Can you play Gotcha on Xbox One or Xbox Series X?

Not through Microsoft's official backward-compatibility programme. Gotcha is not listed in the current Original Xbox catalogue, so a compatible original Xbox and PAL disc are required.

Is Gotcha worth buying today?

Only with modest expectations. It is of interest to original Xbox collectors and people able to arrange System Link matches, but its dated graphics, basic bots, lack of modern support and discontinued Xbox Live service make it a poor choice for solo play.
