What it is

Fallout: New Vegas is Obsidian Entertainment’s single-player role-playing take on Bethesda’s modern Fallout formula. It sends you across the Mojave Wasteland as the Courier, a delivery worker shot in the head and left for dead after carrying a mysterious Platinum Chip. The original UK release was Friday, 22 October 2010, not Tuesday, 19 October, which was the North American date. New Vegas remains one of the strongest choice-driven RPGs of its generation, although its age and technical problems are impossible to ignore.

Story and setting

The game takes place in 2281, around four years after Fallout 3, but its story stands alone. Your recovery in Goodsprings quickly turns into an investigation: who shot you, why did they want the Chip, and what does it have to do with the battle for Hoover Dam and the future of New Vegas?

The Mojave is contested by the New California Republic, Caesar’s Legion and the enigmatic Mr House, while an independent route allows the Courier to reject all three. The important distinction from Fallout 3 is how directly the world responds to your alliances. Quests can open or close according to your reputation, faction clothing can affect how people treat you, and the final outcome reflects the friends, enemies and compromises you made along the way.

How it plays

New Vegas is a first-person action RPG built around exploration, dialogue and character development rather than shooting alone. You create the Courier using Fallout’s SPECIAL attributes, skills, traits and perks, then decide whether to specialise as a gunslinger, sniper, energy-weapons expert, melee fighter, explosives specialist or something less conventional. Dialogue checks tied to skills give many conversations a mechanical purpose, while V.A.T.S. lets you slow combat and target specific body parts.

Combat is more flexible than Fallout 3’s, with iron sights, weapon modifications, ammunition types, companion commands and a wider range of crafting. Hardcore mode adds a proper survival layer: food, water, sleep and ammunition weight matter, while healing is less immediate. It is optional, but it makes the Mojave’s supplies and crafting stations feel considerably more useful. The gunplay is plainly dated by modern standards, and the game’s stiff animations and awkward interfaces are part of the bargain.

DLC and post-launch support

The complete Ultimate Edition includes four substantial story expansions: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road. They take the Courier to the Sierra Madre casino, Zion National Park, the Big MT research crater and the Divide. Each story add-on raises the level cap by five, taking the maximum from 30 to 50. Courier’s Stash and Gun Runners’ Arsenal add equipment, ammunition, weapons, challenges and recipes rather than separate story campaigns.

Post-launch title updates improved stability, quest scripting and balance, but they did not turn New Vegas into a technically polished game. Bugs, quest blockers, long pauses and occasional crashes remain possible, particularly on original hardware. Bethesda still maintains troubleshooting guidance for freezing and crashing on Xbox 360, which is a useful reminder that this is an old release rather than a modern rebuild.

Platforms, editions and UK price

The original game launched on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 version is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, with FPS Boost support on Series consoles. The current Xbox listing also supports cloud play. This improves smoothness and convenience, but it does not replace the underlying 2010 assets, menus, loading behaviour or animation technology.

The current UK Xbox listing shows the base game from £8.99, while the Ultimate Edition is listed at £15.74 on the Microsoft Store. Prices can change. At launch, the standard UK RRP was £49.99 and the UK Collector’s Edition was £69.99, including poker chips, character cards, the Lucky 38 Platinum Chip, the All Roads graphic novel and a making-of DVD. Bethesda’s 15th Anniversary Bundle combines the Ultimate Edition’s PC code with new collectibles, but it is a merchandise package rather than a remastered version.

Reception and what comes next

Critical reception was strong despite the bugs. Eurogamer awarded Fallout: New Vegas 9/10, The Guardian gave it 100, and Metacritic records an 84 critic score for the Xbox 360 version. Reviews generally praised the writing, faction system, side quests and freedom of choice, while criticising crashes, scripting errors, frame-rate problems and the less convincing real-time shooting.

As of 1 October 2026, Bethesda has confirmed that a Fallout: New Vegas remaster is in development, alongside a Fallout 3 remaster. There is no announced release date, UK price, platform list or detail on whether the existing DLC will be included. The original game is therefore the version currently available, and buying it now means accepting the 2010 presentation rather than receiving an upgrade path to the future remaster.
