What it is
Fallout 3 is Bethesda Game Studios’ open-world role-playing game set in the ruins of Washington, DC. It moved the series from its earlier isometric view into first-person and third-person 3D, combining exploration, character development, dialogue choices and shooter combat. The result is still a distinctive single-player RPG: bleak, atmospheric and full of places worth investigating, even if its gunplay and technical presentation now show their age.

Story and setting
You begin life inside Vault 101, an underground shelter built to protect its residents from the nuclear war that destroyed America. When your father leaves the vault unexpectedly, you follow him into the Capitol Wasteland, a ruined version of Washington, DC filled with scavengers, raiders, Super Mutants, ghouls and competing factions.
The main story gives you a clear reason to cross the wasteland, but Fallout 3 is at its best when you leave that path. Towns, metro tunnels, abandoned offices, military sites and famous Washington landmarks hide side quests and smaller stories. Your choices can alter how people treat you, how quests unfold and the fate of several settlements. The writing is generally more serious than the earlier Fallout games, though its dark humour and retro-futurist satire remain important parts of the setting.
How it plays
Fallout 3 can be played from a first-person or third-person perspective. You create a character using the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes, then develop skills and select perks as you gain experience. That lets you lean towards firearms, energy weapons, melee combat, science, medicine, speech or stealth, although the game is less specialised than some later role-playing games.
Combat works in real time, with rifles, pistols, explosives, heavy weapons and improvised equipment, but the defining feature is V.A.T.S. Activating the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System pauses the action and lets you spend Action Points targeting specific body parts. You can queue attacks, check hit percentages and watch the results play out in slow motion. It gives the otherwise clumsy shooting a tactical edge, although weapons degrade, ammunition can be scarce early on and direct aiming feels noticeably less precise than in a dedicated shooter.
There is no co-operative or competitive multiplayer. Fallout 3 is a single-player game built around exploration, questing and the consequences of your decisions.
DLC and updates
Five add-ons were released after launch. Operation: Anchorage places you in a military simulation based on the liberation of Alaska; The Pitt takes you to post-war Pittsburgh; Broken Steel expands the endgame, raises the level cap to 30 and continues the conflict with the Enclave; Point Lookout adds a sizeable swamp region on the Maryland coast; and Mothership Zeta sends you aboard an alien spacecraft.
The Game of the Year Edition includes the original game and all five add-ons, making it the most complete version for a new player. Bethesda also released multiple patches, including the UK English PC version 1.7 in July 2009. On Xbox, the add-ons remain available separately, while the boxed Game of the Year release includes them on its additional disc.
Platforms, editions and UK price
Fallout 3 originally launched on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The Xbox 360 version is backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox Store also supports cloud play. Xbox lists the game as Xbox One X Enhanced: Microsoft says the enhanced version offers higher resolution, up to nine times the original pixel count, and expanded colour detail. It is still the backward-compatible 360 release rather than a native remake.
The current UK Xbox Store price is £8.99 for the standard digital game, with each of the five add-ons listed at £3.39. The Game of the Year Edition is the better choice if you want the complete package, though physical Xbox 360 copies are now a second-hand purchase and prices vary between retailers. Xbox Game Pass Premium and Ultimate include the game for cloud play; Xbox says an Essential subscription requires you to own the game to stream it.
Reception and what comes next
Fallout 3 was strongly received at launch. Eurogamer awarded it 10/10, GameSpot gave it 9/10 and IGN scored it 9.6/10. Its Xbox 360 Metacritic score is 93/100. Critics praised the freedom to explore, the atmosphere of the Capital Wasteland and the way V.A.T.S. made character statistics meaningful during combat. Common reservations included bugs, visual aliasing, stiff character animation and shooting that could feel awkward outside V.A.T.S.
Bethesda Game Studios confirmed in July 2026 that it is working on a Fallout 3 remaster. As of 1 October 2026, the studio has not announced a release date, platforms, price, footage or screenshots. The original remains readily playable on Xbox hardware, but there is no reason to delay a playthrough while waiting for a version whose details are still unknown.

Fallout 3: your questions
Is Fallout 3 on Xbox Game Pass in the UK?
Yes. The Xbox Store currently lists Fallout 3 as included with Xbox Game Pass Premium and Ultimate for cloud play. Xbox says Essential subscribers must purchase the game to stream it.
Can you play Fallout 3 on Xbox Series X or Series S?
Yes. The Xbox 360 version is backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox One X enhancement adds higher resolution and expanded colour detail, but this is not a native current-generation remake.
Does Fallout 3 have multiplayer?
No. Fallout 3 is a single-player RPG with no online multiplayer, co-op or competitive mode.
What is included in Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition?
It includes the base game plus Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta. Broken Steel is particularly useful because it raises the level cap to 30 and extends the endgame.
