Story and setting
You play as an undead exile drawn into Lordran, a kingdom collapsing under the weight of the Curse. The broad objective is clear enough, but the game leaves much of its history, characters and mythology for you to piece together from brief conversations, item descriptions, environmental details and the places you explore.
Lordran is one of the game’s defining achievements. Its areas are not simply separate stages: paths loop back on themselves, distant landmarks turn out to be reachable locations, and shortcuts gradually make the world feel familiar. Bonfires provide checkpoints, restore health and refill your Estus Flask, but resting also brings defeated enemies back to life.
How it plays
Dark Souls is a third-person action RPG built around stamina, timing and observation. Every swing, block, roll and spell has a cost, so rushing into a fight usually ends badly. You can choose from several starting classes, then develop your character through attributes, weapons, armour, shields, magic, miracles and pyromancy. There is no fixed combat role to follow, and different builds can make the same encounters feel very different.
Death is part of the structure rather than a failure state. Defeated enemies grant souls, which act as both experience points and currency. Die, and those souls remain at the site of your death; reach them before dying again and they can be recovered. Lose them, and the only compensation is the knowledge gained from the attempt. The result is demanding but consistent, provided you learn enemy patterns, understand your equipment and resist the temptation to treat every obstacle as a straightforward fight.
Online play and additions
Yes, Dark Souls has an online mode. The original game supports messages, bloodstains, summoned allies, invasions and competitive play, allowing other players to affect your single-player journey without turning it into a conventional shared-world game. The Remastered version moves to dedicated servers, adds password matching and expands online sessions from up to four players to up to six, with co-op groups of up to four.
The Artorias of the Abyss expansion added a substantial journey into Oolacile, along with new areas, enemies, bosses, weapons, spells and online arenas. It was originally sold separately, but is included in Dark Souls: Remastered. Remastered also brings updated visuals, 1080p resolution and a 60fps target on Xbox One, with Xbox One X supporting upscaled 4K. Bandai Namco’s post-launch patch 1.03 fixed several bugs, improved session matching and addressed problems with online messages and cheating.
Platforms, editions and UK price
The original release launched on Xbox 360 in the UK on 7 October 2011. It is one of the Xbox 360 games supported on Xbox One through backwards compatibility, although this is the original 30fps version and not the Remastered edition. The 2018 remaster is available on Xbox One and runs on Xbox Series X and Series S through Xbox One compatibility; there is no separate Series-specific edition announced.
At the time of checking, the Xbox UK store lists Dark Souls: Remastered at £32.99 digitally, while the UK PlayStation Store lists the PS4 version at £34.99. The original 2011 UK launch price was £39.99, and its Limited Edition was offered at the same price, adding an art book, mini strategy guide, behind-the-scenes material and a digital soundtrack. Dark Souls: Remastered is not listed in the current UK Game Pass or PS Plus game catalogues. Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate is required for online console play on Xbox, while PlayStation Plus is required on PlayStation.
Performance and reception
The original Xbox 360 release targets 30fps and is remembered for severe slowdown in parts of Blighttown, alongside occasional camera and collision frustrations. Remastered is the better technical choice on modern Xbox hardware: its 60fps presentation makes combat easier to read and removes the notorious performance problems from the original version’s most demanding areas.
The game was strongly received despite those rough edges. Eurogamer and IGN both awarded it 9/10, while GameSpot gave the Xbox 360 version 9.5/10. The Xbox 360 release holds an 89/100 Metacritic score. Reviews consistently praised the interconnected world, weighty combat, atmosphere and sense of discovery, while noting that its opaque systems, harsh difficulty and technical limitations would not suit everyone.
Not yet confirmed
- No new remake or separate Xbox Series-native edition has been announced beyond Dark Souls: Remastered, which remains playable on Xbox Series X|S.
