What it is
Alan Wake is Remedy Entertainment’s 2010 third-person psychological thriller, first released for Xbox 360 in the UK on Friday, 14 May 2010. It combines a tightly structured, episodic mystery with third-person shooting built around one simple rule: darkness protects the enemy, while light makes them vulnerable. The original remains a focused single-player game rather than an open-world sandbox, and its atmosphere, writing and distinctive combat still give it a clear identity.

Story and setting
Best-selling thriller writer Alan Wake travels to the Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls with his wife, Alice, hoping that a change of scenery will help with his writer’s block. Their holiday quickly turns into a nightmare when Alice disappears, leaving Alan to search the town, its forests and the surrounding wilderness for answers.
During the search, Wake finds pages from a thriller he does not remember writing. The scenes described on those pages begin to happen in the real world, while a malevolent Dark Presence takes control of people and objects around Bright Falls. The story plays with the boundary between fiction and reality, presented in television-style episodes with recaps, cliffhangers and a strong emphasis on narration and character drama.
How it plays
Alan Wake is played from a third-person perspective. Combat revolves around the Fight With Light system: Alan must first burn away the darkness protecting his enemies with a torch, flare or flashbang before conventional weapons such as a revolver, shotgun or hunting rifle can finish the job. Batteries, ammunition and safe light sources are limited enough to make every encounter a question of positioning and resource management rather than simply holding down the trigger.
Between fights, you explore Bright Falls, follow clues, find manuscript pages and other collectibles, solve straightforward environmental problems and take part in occasional vehicle sections. The three difficulty settings are Easy, Normal and Nightmare, with Nightmare unlocking after a completed playthrough. There is no co-operative campaign, competitive mode or online multiplayer.
DLC and later versions
The original Xbox 360 release was followed by two downloadable story expansions. The Signal launched on 27 July 2010, while The Writer followed on 12 October 2010. Both continue Alan’s story and push the setting towards more surreal territory; they are substantial narrative additions rather than new multiplayer or arcade modes. The Windows version, released in 2012, included both expansions.
Alan Wake Remastered arrived on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch from 5 October 2021, with the Switch version following on 20 October 2022. It includes the main game, The Signal and The Writer, plus improved visuals, updated cinematic presentation and a new developer commentary track from Sam Lake. It is a remaster, not a remake, and the gameplay remains fundamentally unchanged.
Platforms, UK price and performance
The original game launched on Xbox 360 and later came to Windows PC. The Xbox 360 version is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, and the Xbox Store lists FPS Boost support on Series X|S. That improves smoothness, but it does not turn the original into the 4K remaster. PlayStation and Switch owners need Alan Wake Remastered, as the 2010 original was never released on those platforms.
At the time of writing, the UK Xbox digital listing for the original is £14.99, while the Windows PC listing is £10.49. Prices can change, and these are digital store prices rather than a current physical RRP. Alan Wake Remastered launched in the UK at £24.99. The original Xbox 360 game was published by Microsoft Game Studios; the PC version was published by Remedy Entertainment.
Reception and verdict
Alan Wake was well received, although its episodic storytelling and atmosphere made a stronger impression than its enemy variety. GameSpot awarded the original 8.5/10, praising its writing, inventive combat and unsettling presentation while noting that encounters become repetitive. Eurogamer gave it 7/10, and the Xbox 360 version holds an 83 Metacritic score.
The age of the original is visible in some animations and repeated combat scenarios, but its central idea remains effective. Light is not just a visual theme or a weapon effect; it controls the rhythm of exploration, combat and escape. Anyone looking for a concise, story-led horror adventure with a strong sense of place will find the original worth playing, particularly through backward compatibility or on PC. Those wanting the cleanest presentation and all story content in one package should choose Alan Wake Remastered instead.
