What it is
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is Project Aces’ 2011 attempt to push the long-running flight-combat series towards a more cinematic, close-range style. It remains an arcade flight game rather than a strict simulator, with accessible controls, real-world locations and a campaign built around spectacular dogfights, attack helicopters, bombers and gunship missions. The UK release was Friday, 14 October 2011, not Tuesday, 11 October, which was the North American launch date.

Story and setting
The story takes place in 2015, as violent anti-establishment movements spread across Africa and local governments ask the United Nations for help. Lieutenant Colonel William Bishop leads the US Air Force’s Warwolf Squadron as part of an international force sent to contain the conflict. Intelligence about a rebel-developed weapon turns a routine intervention into a much larger war.
Unlike most mainline Ace Combat games, Assault Horizon uses a fictionalised version of the real world rather than the series’ usual Strangereal setting. Missions move through recognisable locations and include operations over cities, deserts and coastlines. The tone is deliberately closer to a modern military thriller, although the plot, dialogue and villain are more functional than memorable.
How it plays
The central addition is Dogfight Mode, a close-range system that activates when you get behind an enemy aircraft. It brings the camera tightly onto the target, letting you stay on its tail through violent manoeuvres before lining up a missile or cannon attack. The effect is fast and dramatic, but it also reduces some of the freedom and precision that long-time Ace Combat players expected from open-sky engagements.
Air Strike Mode applies a similar idea to ground attacks, guiding aircraft through low-level attack runs. The campaign regularly changes perspective, putting you in fighter jets, attack helicopters, bomber aircraft, an AC-130 gunship and door-gunner positions. Those changes provide useful variety, though the helicopter and on-rails sections are less refined than the jet missions. The campaign lasts roughly ten hours, with additional aircraft, difficulty levels and free-mission replay value after the story.
Online and post-launch content
Assault Horizon launched with online multiplayer rather than treating it as an afterthought. Capital Conquest has teams attacking an opposing headquarters, Domination focuses on capturing bases, Deathmatch is a conventional player-versus-player dogfight, and co-op Mission mode lets players tackle combat objectives together. Online progression unlocks aircraft and callsigns, giving the multiplayer side a reason to continue beyond the campaign.
Post-launch content added more aircraft, aircraft skins, skill sets and an Online Map Pack. The downloadable line-up included machines such as the ASF-X Shinden II, F-15S/MTD, Su-37 Terminator, Tornado GR.4, Ka-50 Hokum and YF-23 Black Widow II, although availability varied between console and PC versions. On PC, a February 2014 update replaced Games for Windows Live with Steamworks while retaining saves and achievements. Bandai Namco later ended digital distribution of the console game and its downloadable content in January 2017.
Platforms, editions and UK price
The original console release was on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Ace Combat Assault Horizon Enhanced Edition arriving on PC through Steam in 2013. The Xbox 360 version is the one relevant to this page and remains tied to the original hardware, with no official Xbox One or Xbox Series enhancement or modern console edition listed by the publisher.
The UK retail launch included a standard edition and a Limited Edition. The verified UK recommended price for the Limited Edition was £49.99. It came in a folded box with the game, soundtrack, an exclusive aircraft download and a notebook signed by the development team. The publisher’s 2017 withdrawal of console downloads means second-hand physical copies are now the practical UK option. It is not a current Game Pass or PS Plus catalogue title, and prices from specialist and marketplace sellers vary considerably.
Reception and verdict
Critical opinion was broadly favourable but noticeably less enthusiastic from established Ace Combat followers. The Xbox 360 release holds a 78 Metascore on Metacritic. IGN awarded it 7.5 out of 10, while VideoGamer gave it 8 out of 10, praising the controls, soundtrack, spectacle and multiplayer but pointing to repetitive missions, awkward helicopter handling and poor checkpointing. The Guardian also found it an engrossing and attractive compromise between an arcade game and a simulator.
Assault Horizon is best understood as a stylish, accessible spin-off rather than the definitive Ace Combat experience. Its close-range dogfights still deliver a strong sense of speed and impact, and the campaign’s changing aircraft types remain unusual within the series. The trade-off is a more scripted structure, a weaker story and mechanics that sometimes force cinematic presentation over player control. It is worth seeking out for Xbox 360 collectors and fans of arcade flight combat, but anyone expecting Ace Combat 6’s broader battlefield design should adjust their expectations.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon: your questions
Is Ace Combat: Assault Horizon backwards compatible on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S?
No official Xbox One or Xbox Series version is listed. The Xbox 360 release is not part of the publisher’s current modern-console offering, so a compatible Xbox 360 system and physical copy are the dependable route.
Does Ace Combat: Assault Horizon have online multiplayer?
Yes. It includes Capital Conquest, Domination, Deathmatch and co-op Mission mode. The game originally used Xbox Live on Xbox 360, although current matchmaking activity is not officially reported.
Is Ace Combat: Assault Horizon a flight simulator?
It is an arcade-style combat flight game with simulator elements. The controls are deliberately accessible, while Dogfight Mode and Air Strike Mode make combat more cinematic and streamlined than a serious simulation.
What aircraft can you fly in Assault Horizon?
The game includes modern fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, bombers and specialised sections involving an AC-130 gunship and door-gunner positions. Downloadable content added further aircraft and skins after launch.
What is the UK release date for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon?
